AWIC, the Indian section of the international organization IBBY, was delighted when it was chosen to receive the IBBY Yamada Fund this year. The Yamada fund is given for the purpose of developing a book culture for children. This year a grant was given to AWIC for the purpose of setting up a library and conducting workshops to train librarians and others who would be working in it. |

A team of four members, Indira Bagchi ,Ira Saxena, Vibala Rastogi and Pratibha Majumdar, from the Association of Writers and Illustrators (AWIC), went to a far off village of Kanduni , in Sitapur District of Uttar Pradesh, to set up a library. Their partner in the project was the NGO ‘Social Action for Welfare & Cultural advancement’ (SWACA), which was founded and nurtured by a young and dynamic couple Sharat and Gunjan Chowdhary. This NGO is working for the overall development of Kanduni and educating the women of the village. |

AWIC equipped the library with a large number of books suitable for children and young people. The list of books had been painstakingly drawn over a period of several months by AWIC members. A concious attempt had been made to ensure that the quality of the books was good in both production quality and content. |

Both children and adults showed tremendous enthusiasm for the library. The library will surely make a difference in the lives of the children of that area and AWIC can feel satisfied at a job well begun. |
